    Job Description

    As the environmental research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Desert Research Institute (DRI) conducts cutting-edge applied research in air, land and life, and water quality across Nevada, the United States and on every continent. With more than 450 employees and two main campuses in Reno and Las Vegas, DRI has earned a reputation for delivering high quality environmental science in a business-like fashion. As a DRI employee, you will help support and share in the accomplishments of this world-class organization.

    DRI is seeking to fill multiple full-time Assistant Custodian and/or Custodian positions, located in Reno, NV, working under general supervision, to perform various cleaning services in the Reno facilities. Both positions include the basic following responsibilities:

    • Mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, trash pickup, cleaning, sanitizing and restocking restrooms.
    • Performing scheduled floor maintenance tasks, such as steam cleaning carpets, and waxing/buffing tile floors.
    • Checking janitorial equipment for worn/broken belts, broken wires, leaks, change vacuum bags at regular intervals, and cleaning equipment on monthly or as need basis.
    • Complete necessary repairs including unclogging toilets, repairing leaks and minor maintenance.
    • Maintaining building safety and security by ensuring that doors are securely locked at all appropriate times and conducting building sweeps at close of business.
    • Assist with the Institute's recycling program of paper, aluminum cans, plastics, cardboard, batteries, etc.
    • Remove and/or de-ice stairs and sidewalks whenever snow or ice has accumulated.
    • General assistance to department personnel, faculty and staff. Assist with special events.

      Additional Responsibilities for Custodian

      • Change flush valves and fixtures when necessary.
      • Maintain janitorial equipment on an as need basis.
      • Respond to on-call phone for fire, security, and mechanical failures for the campus.
      • Drive company vehicles

        Assistant Custodian Required Qualifications

        • Minimum of one year of full-time entry custodial or janitorial experience.

          Custodian Required Qualifications

          • Minimum of two years of full-time custodial or janitorial experience.
          • Possession of valid driver's license by date of hire.
          • Basic mechanical skills.

            General Required Qualifications

            • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office Word and Outlook.
            • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read/understand labels and mixing directions.
            • Knowledge of safety procedures and safe work practices.
            • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of personnel, including technical and academic staff.
            • Proven success working within a team environment.

              Preferred Qualifications (optional)

              Greater consideration will be given to those who possess one or more of the following skills:

              • Experience working in an institutional, commercial, or educational building setting.
              • Familiarity of LEED cleaning procedures.
              • Experience using snow blowers and/or quad with snow plow.

                Schedule

                These positions include shift work. Working hours are Monday - Thursday 11:00 am - 8:00 pm, and Friday 11:00 am - 6:00 pm.

                The Custodian position will be required to be on-call (on a rotating basis) and to respond to after-hours emergencies. This does not apply to the Custodial Assistant position.

                Physical Requirements

                This position requires the ability to perform physical tasks, such as lifting objects in excess of 50 lbs., climbing ladders and working at heights up to 30 ft; frequently stooping, bending, and kneeling; exposure to dust, fumes, pollutant, and construction materials; handling and mixing of chemicals and moving hazardous waste.

                Conditions of Employment

                • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
                • Technologist positions have a 6-month probationary period where your job performance will be reviewed at 3 months and then 6 months, at which time you may be taken off probation with satisfactory reviews. Unsatisfactory reviews during the first 6 months may result in termination.

                  Compensation Grade

                  This is a DRI Technologist position; candidates will be hired at the level that is comparable to their experience, skills, and abilities.

                  Assistant Custodian - Grade 25, starting hourly rate is $16.19/hr.

                  Custodian - Grade 27, starting hourly rate is $17.52/hr.

                  Starting salary can be negotiated dependent on experience. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance (Choice of two health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts); PERS 15.25% retirement match, 10 hours of annual AND sick leave accrued per month (20 hours total), 11 paid holidays in addition to annual and sick leave, and educational benefits. Additionally, there is no state income tax or social security deductions. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
