Position Description

Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by State and federal safety and health laws and regulations.

NDEP has over 80 field inspection staff that visit industrial facilities across the state to evaluate compliance with environmental laws. This position will develop, manage, direct, and provide training on the Division's employee protection programs. The position will establish and maintain an internal specialization for state and federal rules and regulations, including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA,) Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), hazardous waste operations (HAZWOPER), and emergency management Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP). It will also prepare safety reports for NDEP Managers and Administration, prepare and provide presentations or facilitate training of staff in hazard recognition, prepare for and host quarterly Division Safety Committee Meetings and generally work to ensure policies and procedures are in place to protect the health and safety of NDEP employees at hazardous worksites and while working within NDEP offices.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, Occupational Safety and Health, or a closely related field and one year of experience in adult education, including course presentation on occupational safety and health-related topics; OR an Associate's degree in Applied Science from an accredited school in science, occupational safety and health, or a closely related field, and three years of experience as described above; OR certification as an Associate in Loss Control Management, an Associate Safety Professional, an Occupational Safety and Health Technologist, or an Associate Safety and Health Manager, and two years of experience as described above; OR municipal, State, or national instructor certification in safety and health, hazardous materials, environmental sciences, fire science or a related field and two years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience.
