Summary of Position:

The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) provides basic and advanced respiratory care services according to established policies, procedures and protocols; ensuring care is safe and effective. The RCP assesses, plans, implements and evaluates respiratory care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team. The RCP demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to identify and meet the individualized needs of all patients served by the Respiratory Care Department. Services are provided based on the ages of the population served; newborn through geriatric - 65 years or older and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team. The RCP participates in organizational shared governance by virtue of their required and proactive participation in the RCS Unit Council (RCSUC) monthly for all departmental clinical decision making.

Qualifications

Education:

Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program

Experience:

Minimum one year experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Sufficient computer skills as are required to complete an online application and the pre-employment/computer requirements

In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred

Certifications/Licensure:

  • Current RRT by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • Current California RCP license
  • Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or ability to obtain prior to start date
  • Current ACLS, PALS, and NRP certification prior to hire or must enroll and complete the first available Barton University courses

Essential Functions

  • Provide consistently exceptional care at all times.
  • Provides patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with others as required and adjusts care plan as necessary to ensure optimal respiratory care for the patient.
  • Services provided include bronchial hygiene therapy, volume expansion therapy, patient monitoring, medicated aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator support, emergency and sustained airway control, code blue and code c-birth support teams, rapid response team, arterial blood draws, formal and bedside pulmonary function studies, bronchoscopy, patient education.
  • Performs respiratory assessment at designated and appropriate intervals on all assigned patients, recognizing disturbed physiology and abnormal parameters.

  • Assesses levels of discomfort on all patients:
  • Upon initial respiratory assessment and reassessments according to standards
  • Evaluates location, severity, intensity and quality of pain.
  • Reevaluates discomfort level in response to intervention/ treatment
  • Based on assessment findings, initiates appropriate actions. Correctly analyzes, prioritizes and implements physician orders in a timely fashion and according to policy.
  • Administers respiratory care modalities and therapeutics as ordered by the physician or as required, specific to clinical protocols and/or clinical pathways.
  • Monitors patient outcomes in relationship to established criteria to therapies provided.
  • Reports any adverse reaction to therapy or alteration in patient condition to appropriate individuals.
  • Recognizes unusual conditions outside of his/her expertise and seeks guidance of coworkers or supervisors.
  • Keeps patient/family informed of progress and procedures. Focuses on customer service needs.
  • The patient's learning needs, abilities, preferences and readiness to learn is assessed by the care team. Effectively educates patients, families in respiratory medications safety, safe use of respiratory care equipment and applicable rehabilitation techniques.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of documentation in patient medical record for each patient interaction to include:
  • Assessment, treatment response, adverse reaction and patient outcomes.
  • Computerized patient data entry, editing and billing procedures
  • CQI/Research data collection tools
  • Patient education and skills training
  • Operates equipment and performs job related duties in a safe manner. Ensures proper functioning of equipment and follows procedure when equipment malfunctions.
  • Demonstrates competency in all equipment, procedures and protocols utilized by the Respiratory Care Services Department including:
  • All classes of therapy
  • Invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator support and discontinuance
  • Bedside pulmonary function studies
  • Non-invasive monitoring
  • Emergency Bronchoscopy
  • Arterial blood draws
  • Neonatal intubations
  • Orients, instructs and trains assigned personnel to RCP functions under the direction of the assigned staff Preceptor, and/or Manager
  • Responds to crisis situation in a safe, effective and professional manner:
  • Prioritizes needs
  • Utilizes support staff appropriately
  • Makes appropriate decisions based on sound rationale
  • Maintains a calming demeanor
  • Participates in post code debriefs and Rapid Response Team reviews in a positive and supportive fashion.
  • The staff member is able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to identify each patient's age-specific needs. All competencies are based on ages served. NRP/PALS/ACLS are all current.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of regulatory and licensing standards and ensures that practice is compliant with standards. This also refers to all outcome-based and adopted evidence-based initiatives used within the organization.
  • Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
