EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, operates light, medium and heavy duty
equipment used in groups and landscaping work and acts as lead over
assigned grounds maintenance personnel. May be assigned to an early
morning, morning, day or evening shift. Incumbent performs related
work as required.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Functions in a lead capacity over assigned grounds maintenance
personnel; assigns and oversees work; inspects work in progress and
completed work for compliance with District policies and job order
and safety specifications.
Assumes responsibility for the operation of specialized heavy duty
motorized equipment; operates on regular basis medium and heavy
power-driven equipment such as orders, loaders, backhoes, tractors,
snowplows and dump trucks; operates torches, welding equipment,
jackhammer, and similar equipment used in construction, installing
and removing playground and athletic field equipment and other
District grounds improvements; and performs preventative
maintenance and minor repairs on equipment. May perform minor
carpentry, painting and other less skilled maintenance duties when
operation of equipment is not necessary.
May perform supervisory duties in absence of Groundskeeper
Supervisor.
May be called upon on off-hours for school emergencies, such as
burglaries, vandalism, fires, snow removal, equipment failures,
flooding, etc.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and
experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and
skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and
skills would be:

Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance procedures for a variety of
heavy construction and maintenance equipment; methods, practices
and materials used in construction, maintenance and welding; and
occupational hazards and safety precautions for use of hand, power,
pneumatic, and welding tools and equipment. Basic computer
skills.
Skill at: Working independently; operating light, medium and heavy
construction and maintenance equipment; using hand and power tools,
cutting torch, arc and gas welding equipment; reading, interpreting
and applying information from blueprints, sketches, diagrams and
technical repair manuals; understanding and carrying out oral and
written instructions; making estimates of materials and labor
costs; preparing and maintaining operational and inventory records
and report; performing heavy manual labor; and establishing and
maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in
course of work.
Certification: AHERA 16 Hour asbestos training, asbestos
certification is required within the first 12 months of employment.
Employer will provide training.
Certification: OSHA Lead Action Training. Certification will be
required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will
provide training.
Special Requirements: : All incumbents in this job classification
will be required to assist or perform work associated with other
trades, will be required to physically perform AHERA Class III
disturbances to asbestos and lead containing building materials as
directed in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local
regulations. Will be required to physically perform OSHA lead
remediation in accordance with all applicable federal, state and
local regulations. May be required to physically perform mold
remediation in accordance with all applicable federal, state and
local regulations.
Physical Demands: This work requires considerable and strenuous
physical exertion, such as frequently climbing of tall ladders,
lifting heavy objects over 60 pounds, pushing balancing, stooping,
kneeling,
Crouching, or reaching, crawling in restricted areas. . Must have
the ability to enter all areas of a facility including attics and
crawl spaces. To some extent, the frequency or intensity of
physical exertion must also be considered.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid
Nevada State Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with a
driving record acceptable to the District.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease
each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School
District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the
position.

Additional Job Information
This is a 40 hour a week, 260 day position.
INCENTIVES
Eligible employees of WCSD receive different benefits depending on
their scheduled hours per week.
Employees who work less than 20 hours per week receive Social
Security benefits, salary increases, longevity bonuses, and credit
union benefits.
Employees who work 20 to 24.75 hours per week receive PERS
retirement benefits, which are lifetime pension plans for public
employees in various states,
In addition to the benefits above. Employees who work 25 to 27.25
hours per week receive all the benefits above except medical,
dental, and vision insurance.
Employees who work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full
benefits of the district, including medical, dental, and vision
insurance, holiday pay, vacation pay, sick leave, life insurance,
and insurance premiums for summer months.
Please be advised there is a 90-day waiting period for insurance
benefits.
All eligible employees also enjoy no state income tax and no Social
Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or
more.
New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years
thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck
to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees
will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed
every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive
benefits.
