Job Description JOB SUMMARYThe Department of Public Works (DPW)
Commissary Assistant Manager will help manage the construction and
operations of the Commissary for the Burning Man event production
season. They will assist the Commissary Manager in supervising the
Commissary Staff and will be responsible for creating daily crew
schedules and tracking meal counts. This is a temporary, full-time,
ineligible for benefits role, located in Gerlach, NV that spans
from early-August to mid-September.The deadline to apply for this

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSOperations (70%)
- Survey the Commissary site on playa to help plan for and
facilitate the layout and infrastructure build of the Commissary;
Coordinate crew for setup and breakdown by assigning teams,
monitoring workflow, overseeing the unloading of the Commissary
trailer and containers and empowering with knowledge and open
communication.
- Interface with infrastructure resource departments such as
Fuel, Power, and Plumbing for the setup and maintenance of
Commissary needs.
- Support the staffing process by gathering crew contact details
and information necessary for Commissary pod layout.
- Orient team members to the rules, protocols and procedures of
the Commissary Operations and outline clear responsibilities of
their roles; Observe and provide relevant crew feedback to the
Commissary Manager on issues relating to interpersonal dynamics or
performance concerns..
- Act as the liaison between the Commissary and other Burning Man
Operations departments to coordinate meal access, including but not
limited to BMIDs Tech and Burning Man Personnel Managers; escalate
any issues as needed.
- Ensure that the Commissary is prepped prior to each meal so it
can open on time and as scheduled; be prepared to arrive ready to
work as early as 6am.
- Monitor behavior in the Commissary and understand how to create
boundaries that support a safe, equitable and respectful dining
experience for a wide variety of people while maintaining good
humor and uplifting morale; proactively crowd control potentially
damaging or negatively disruptive activities.
- Maintain areas are clean and free of spills, trash, and safety
hazards, ensuring that best health, sanitation practices and
cleanliness standards are being exercised by all staff and
guests.
- Work with the Commissary Crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste
disposal plans for the Commissary and Commissary Business
Park.Administrative and Planning (20%)
- Schedule and manage Commissary Staff ensuring adequate coverage
for all shifts, setting manageable work expectations and checking
in on well-being of individuals and crew morale.
- Manage the collection and submission of staff working hours for
bi-weekly payroll, ensuring that paychecks are distributed to paid
crew in a timely manner.
- Prepare written feedback for DPW Management describing the
successes of the season and areas in need of improvement with the
purpose of improved overall efficiency and suggestions for the next
year.Other Functions and Responsibilities (10%)
- Attend and require crew attendance to daily Morning
Meetings.
- Participate in Managers' Meetings and maintain related
correspondence.
- Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning
Man's staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
- Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and
managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with
management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.LEARNING AND TEACHING
- Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and
maintenance of process documentation related to assigned
duties.
- Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and
training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as
requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout
the community.
- Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge,
skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the
organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
- Training development - Collaborates with the education team to
develop training materials in their area of expertise, as
requested.
- Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise,
working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and
processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking
events, where appropriate.
- Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert
and culture-bearer, as requested.QUALIFICATIONS Required
- Clearly and concisely communicates verbally and through written
correspondence. Tailors communication to the receiving party with
appropriate professionalism. Experienced and comfortable with using
2 way radios.
- Honest and ethical with a dedication to the Burning Man
principles and behavioral standards, Reliable; fulfills
obligations.
- Able to accept and integrate feedback, remain calm and focused
under pressure; Able to lead a team in emergency situations and
proactively create ease for a crowd either by posting preventative
signage and/or with public speaking skills.
- Able to maintain a respectful and polite demeanor, providing
services with compassion, thoughtful acknowledgment and
accommodation of requests when appropriate; Understands basic-needs
psychology around food; Able to help identify and provide a safe
space for a wide variety of people.
- Effective communication at all levels (able to adapt style when
necessary); Sensitive to others' needs and feelings, understanding
and helpful while still maintaining firm boundaries and adhering to
set standards.
- Inspires, motivates and encourages a collaborative work
environment.
- Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader by

- Working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets,
Drive) and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Able to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event
held in Gerlach, Nevada.Preferred
- It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning

- Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special
demands are required.
- On-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the

some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside
weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne
